What a Gum Graft Is and What It Entails

A gum graft involves carefully extracting tissue from one area of the mouth and attaching it to an area where little or no gum tissue exists. Gum grafts are favorable for people with receding gums. It is a simple surgical procedure where the patient can leave after it is finished.

In a gum graft, your periodontist first removes a piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth or from nearby healthy gum tissue. They next attach it to the area where your gums have worn away. Your body’s natural healing process takes over once the initial gum graft is complete. New blood vessels grow into the graft and help it to become integrated with the surrounding tissue. Once the gum graft is healed, you will have less risks of gum recession or tooth sensitivity in that area.

After you receive a gum graft, make sure that you practice good oral hygiene. This will not only maintain the gum graft work that took place but also prevent other gum problems from developing in the future.
